Mike Keneally

Eccentric rock virtuoso Mike Keneally plays guitar and keyboards, sings and composes and produces and does a lot of other things, all of which are fascinating to listen to and nearly impossible to describe.

Largely self-taught, Mike played "stunt guitar" and keyboards in Frank Zappa's last touring band and has appeared on a bunch of Zappa albums, has recorded or performed with XTC, Robert Fripp, Sting, Kevin Gilbert, Steve Vai, The Loud Family, Henry Kaiser, Michael Manring, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Andy Prieboy, The Persuasions and scads of others, and has been producing solo works since the early '90s.

Mike Borkosky attended and graduated from Fanshaw music school in Toronto, Canada. He has played guitar and/or bass with the following artists: Lee Aaron, Alannah Myles, Melanie Doane and Nude 101.

As James tells us, "Mike has also played with Andy Curran who once played with a band, Coney Hatch. I actually sang for Coney Hatch for one year after their third album. I was 23 years old. I didn't do any recording with them; [I] just toured in Canada and once in Buffalo." Mike also has a solo project called Bork in which he sings and plays guitar. In addition, he has produced records for Melanie, Alannah and of course himself.

Thoughts on MullMuzzler 2:

"When James called, I was in the home stretch of a 6 week marathon project, compiling and mixing a live Melanie Doane record. My head was pretty cluttered and of course I said "I'm in" when asked to contribute to the MullMuzzler record, the word "no" not being regularly exercised in my vocabulary. I knew the Dream Theater vibe and thought it would be a real fun challenge to jump on board, and informed James that I was not a "shredder" guy but definitely into rocking ferociously and experimenting with sounds. He said he was looking for a different dimension to add to this record, and we set up some studio time.

"I described those 3 days in the studio as "cranium-dranium." James had sent me rough versions of the songs to get a feel, but until I actually dove in it didn't occur to me how much needed to be done. I definitely got off on the prog meets rock vibe (being as much a Yes/Genesis/King Crimson freak as I am for Zep and STP) and the challenge of nailing the intricacies of the rhythm guitar parts. The layering of overdubs was also a gas; that's the stage I love of creating textures and dynamics to move the music and entice the listener. By the time I received a copy of the disc in the mail, most of my memory of it was gone, being already involved in about 4 new projects. It's certainly a fun ride, an awesome multi-punch of musicality, emotion and sonics. It's great to hear it as a whole and see how the pieces fit together, from people often not even in the same room (or country) at the same time. And of course James' voice is the thread of consistency, he sounds great and as an artist he's really pulled off a cool record."
